Why Wetlands Matter
March 16th, 2018New Harmony cares about how Louisiana learns to live with water.
One important water management tool are naturally occurring wetlands because they provide a natural barrier to storm surges. In Louisiana’s Coastal Restoration Plan after Hurricane Katrina, wetlands were protected from development because they can store stormwater, slowing a storm surge. Some wetlands are inside the levees and protect people and property if levees fail, additionally they can hold water in case of a flood that strains municipal pumping systems. Proposals to develop wetlands threaten flood protection.
