Getting to Know Our Advisories:
Dina, 10th grade

Meet Dina’s advisory, also known as “Intergalactic Scoobies”. Dina has the largest group of students of any advisor, totalling at 17 kids, as she welcomed two new sophomores this year.  Dina enjoys being an advisor because it feels like a family – a home away from home where they laugh, cry, and break bread together. Here’s what your advisee’s had to say.

“Our advisory is chill. It is a time to relax but also an opportunity to connect with people you don’t usually have classes with or wouldn’t usually make friends with” – Sofia

“Dina’s advisory is calm and mellow. In our advisory, we have a choice to do what we want.” – Leyton

“I love being in Dina’s advisory because I know that she will always support me no matter what. She backs me up when I’m right, she challenges me when I’m wrong, and I know that she’ll never give up on me.” – Jojo

Way to go Dina. We love you! It was also Dina’s birthday this week, make sure to wish her a happy belated.

What We’re Reading

On Wednesday, everyone in Humanities II selected the texts they will be reading and analyzing for the remainder of the quarter in their weekly book clubs. Each story follows the Hero’s Journey template, whether exactly (as in Homer’s Odyssey) or a little more loosely (like Ken Kesey’s One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest) and gives NHH students a chance to discuss and apply major themes across genres and time periods, while getting invested in the habit of reading for pleasure. For the next five weeks, we will focus on a different literary device and seek out examples of how each author crafts their tale and develops a hero, while writing our own reflections about the experience. Ask your student which book they’re working on!

HARMONY HIGHLIGHT:

Carl, 9th grade

What is something you do well?

Dance and act. My favorite show is “Bring It” on lifetime. It’s about girls showing sportsmanship, and that learning is the most valuable lesson of all.

What is something you have learned in the past week?

You cannot control other peoples actions, only your own.

What is a misconception people have about you?

People think that I’m mean, but I’m definitely not, just outgoing but can be intimidating.

What is the biggest dream you have for yourself that you do not often say aloud?

I want to be just like Cardi B someday.

Who has had a positive influence on your life so far and why?

My Papa (grandpa), he shows me how to be a real man and take care of myself. He doesn’t let me depend on anyone else but myself.

Have a great weekend!
