Upcoming Community Opportunity:
Apply Today!

The Mayor’s Neighborhood Engagement Office, in partnership with the Mayor’s Office of Youth and Families, would like to invite you to participate in Junior Civic Leadership Academy (JCLA). This initiative from Mayor LaToya Cantrell is an engaging 8-week program that will provide youth with an in-depth look at City government. The program includes hands-on demonstrations and presentations that give participants an insider’s view of how the City of New Orleans operates. With this knowledge, students will be better equipped to engage their communities and help improve residents’ quality of life.

You can participate if you are between the ages of 13-18, live in New Orleans, are interested in government, and are interested in learning how to improve your community.

Applications will be available online. Applications must be received no later than 5pm on Friday, May 15th.

Please see additional details here.

Some Fun on Zoom This Week

We’re continuing to have fun on Zoom calls together. Here, 10th grader Jojo and Kitty show off their beloved dogs, and 9th grader Susan shows off her Louisiana inspired hand woven bracelet to Nia.

Students of the Week:
9th & 10th Grade

Kar’Lesha, Class of 2023

Our sophomore student of the week is… Karkar!

From Kitty: “Kar’Lesha sent Katy and I a poem she wrote for Humanities project first thing Monday morning. It was the absolute best way to start of my week! She’s navigating all the challenges of online learning (clearly not her preferred learning style), spent 2 hours working on geometry with an online whiteboard, and never shows signs of fatigue or frustration. A true joy to see on the screen!” And, if that wasn’t enough, here is the review she recently received from her internship mentor: Kar’Lesha had a wonderful talent in art and was able to inspire in the students an interest in exploring art materials.”

Bella, Class of 2022

Representing 9th grade as Student of the Week is Bella Bernard! Bella has consistently gone above and beyond. She turns in work early, seeks connection with her advisory, is making a gymnastics video for PE (🤸🏼‍♂️!), AND is the only student in Jeff and Katy’s Fahrenheit 451 book club! Great job Bella – we’re proud of you!
