Community Contributors
This week our Gulf Equity Water Corp members were hard at work.
On Wednesday, Sophomores Izzy and Mervin, lead a lesson on sea-level rise and its impact on the Gulf coast, which culminated with a game of climate change jeopardy.
At the same time, Elaina and Zoey lead a lesson on storm management and the importance of clean catch basins, which was followed by a Catch Basin Scavenger Hunt-students walked identifying catch basins that were functional and those they need to be fixed or clean.
And last but not least, last night, Mervin and Izzy were hard at work again hosting a community presentation at the Global Green Center. The presentation was held in the Lower Ninth Ward, informing community members of the causes and consequences of global sea-level rise and how it is disproportionately impacting residents living in the Lower Ninth Ward Community in New Orleans, Louisiana.
What We’re Reading
In Fernando’s class, Scientific Principles and Environmental Wellness, 9th graders are reading recent studies about the correlation between elevated moods and being in green spaces. After using geo-location technology and analyzing positive v. negative word usage in tweets sent out over the past decade, scientists have concluded that being in urban green space can elevate your mood by 20%. This is the same average mood elevation that many people feel during the holidays. Moral of the story, urban green space is a free and accessible resource for boosting your happiness! You can read more about the study here.
Here’s a photo of Fernando after spending too much time inside. Don’t worry, he took his students to the Bayou for outdoor learning this week.
HARMONY HIGHLIGHT:
Naje
What is something you do well?
I make people laugh.
What is something you have learned in the past week?
I learned how to do percentages.
What is a misconception people have about you?
People think that I’m too energetic.
What is the biggest dream you have for yourself that you do not often say aloud?
I want to be a computer programmer.
Who has had a positive influence on your life so far and why?
My mom (even though we butt heads) because she always makes sure I get my work done and even calls me at school to help me do things.
What would you do differently if you knew nobody would judge you?
I don’t really care if people judge me because if you judge me, it means you are focusing on the wrong thing.
What do you like about New Harmony?
I like the community and how they don’t put too much stress on us. If they see us struggling in a class, we get pulled out and help us chill out.
