Redesigning 21st Century Pumps

When a pump was designed to control flooding in New Orleans in the 20th century it was a feat of engineering. It created new patterns of settlement and segregation in the city. However, after August’s floods it is clear that the impending climate changes will be too much for the pumps which are over 100 years old.

The former superintendent of the sewage and water board said “‘Doesn’t cut it anymore…How do we find ways to build adequate technology that will last us into the next century?’”

This is the type of question we will ask our students to analyze and potential build projects around.
