March 30th, 2018New Harmony is interested in ways that people can live more harmoniously near water. Water can cause devastating property loss, however some groups are finding ways to lessen the damaging effects of flooding.
When a Baton Rouge home not in a designated high flood risk area took in 29 inches of water, the homeowner was devastated. However, several nonprofit groups and the LSU Agricultural Center stepped in to restore the home into a model for construction in floodplains. These groups are looking for practical, innovative solutions to flood-proof homes. Homes can be built so they are easier to restore if flooding occurs and prevent major damage from floods.
