Leaving-to-Learn
This week, New Harmony was welcomed by NORD (New Orleans Recreation Development) and the Audubon Nature Institute. Students got a lesson in astronomy at the planetarium, where we saw live photos from NASA Satellites, compared the size of our sun to other suns in our vast universe, and discussed our place as humans on Earth.
We followed up with a nature trail walk and canoe trip where we reflected on our role as stewards of the Earth and removed invasive species from the trails.Thoughtful student reflection post field trip…
“I never knew how unique our planet is and how it rare its conditions are. It really makes you think about our place as human beings and how important it is that we work to preserve and mitigate climate change issues that threaten this beautiful world” -Anonymous Student
Clothing Swap!
This week, to prepare ourselves and our community for a cold break, we hosted a clothing swap and will be donating the rest of the clothes.Reduce and reuse, y’all.
Open Mic
On Wednesday evening, a few of our students and staff members attended the New Orleans Youth Open Mic show at the Ashe Cultural Arts Center. Poetry Open Mic occurs from 6-8pm every 3rd Wednesday of the month. Our students will be attending each Open Mic to present their poems and practice their passions. We are so proud of the students who participated this week, and we applaud them for their courage and confidence.
Upcoming Local Events and Learning Opportunities
DRAW-A-THON!
Our kids re-purposed the Zine Canoe with our friends from A Paper Boat Project that visited New Harmony High’s stage during the first quarter. The boat will now be at the 13th Annual Draw-a-thon, a 24-hour drawing festival at the Green Project, this weekend. The new layer will be called “DREAMBOAT: Drawings from Beneath the Surface.” The theme focuses on coastal Louisiana activism and culture.
We hope to see you there!
No-Phones-Allowed Game Night
A New Harmony student’s Girl Scout Troop is hosting an electronic free game night at the Norman Mayer Library on Wednesday evening, November 28. If you would like your child to ditch the screens for an evening and engage in some good old-fashioned game night fun, check it out!

HARMONY HIGHLIGHT
Zoey
What is something you do well?
Creative writing, and I read really well. I am a good problem-solver, and I am responsible.
What is something you learned in the past week?
How to manage my time better. I was late with my Agile Mind, so I realized I can’t wait around and procrastinate.
What is the biggest misconception people have about you?
That I don’t understand other people’s points of view, and that I am very quiet.
What is the biggest dream you have yourself that you are afraid to say aloud?
The biggest dream I have would probably be being a famous female music producer.
Who has had a positive influence on your life so far and why?
My parents and friends because they are kind of like my guidance counselors and therapists.
What would you do differently if you knew nobody would judge you?
A lot of things… probably be more open-minded to controversial topics.
What do you like about New Harmony?
I like how everything is very free and different and open. We get a lot of support here. We get a fair chance at everything, and a chance to always redeem yourself.
We hope you have a week filled with gratitude, family, and friends during the holiday!
