Open House:
Thank you for joining us!
Students hosted our first Open House of the year last Wednesday evening. We’d like to give them a shout out for being amazing Student Ambassadors by offering tours, discussing their internships, our curriculum, and their favorite New Harmony experiences.
If you didn’t get a chance to attend Open House we still encourage you to schedule a shadow day or school tour. The One App opens in just one week on Friday, November the 22nd.
A letter to prospective friends and families from the New Harmony Recruitment Director:
New Harmony is more than a place to send your child to school, it’s a community that will foster relationships, skills, and passions that are life-long. I’ve known that New Harmony was special since it’s inception, and am so grateful that a high school focused on social justice, authentic relationships, real-world experience, and environmental thinking has finally found a place to thrive in our city. I’ve been working in New Orleans education for 5 years and am honored to be a part of New Harmony’s unique approach to student’s individual success and the NHH mission through family outreach. During my time working as an educator, I’ve never seen so many people, kids and adults, excited to come to school, and sad to leave it during the summertime.
I encourage all families to schedule a shadow day with one of our Student Ambassadors. I am happy to connect your family to current New Harmony families to discuss their experiences with you. I can also connect you with teachers if you’d like to discuss the curriculum with them in further depth.

Leaving to Learn:
Black Mangroves
On Thursday, the ninth-graders waded into the mud in Port Fourchon with Dr. Sarah Mack of Tierra Resources. In hip-high boots stuffed with gatorade, the students collected thousands of black mangrove propagules (which are plants, not seeds!). While the students slept on the bus back to New Orleans, a crop-dusting plane spread the propagules along the Louisiana delta to help control coastal erosion and minimize the impacts of storm surges.

Internship Highlight
A message from our fellowship partners at Our Voice Nuestra Voz:
“Our Voice Nuestra Voz is excited to welcome two interns from New Harmony High School! Destin and Jojo will support us as we organize parents to be leaders in the fight for education reform. Too often, parents sit on the outside of policies that directly impact our children. Our Voice Nuestra Voz seeks to reverse this by training parents to take their seat at the table and speak to decision-makers from a place of experience and not theory.
Destin and Jojo are doing some research on improving the transportation options for students in Orleans Parish. If you have experienced difficulties navigating transportation for your students or are interested in anything else that impacts the quality of your student’s education you can fill out an interest card or
New Harmony High is partnering with 826 New Orleans on a two week creative writing project called “Once Upon a Time in a City Called New Orleans.” Students will be creating dystopian flash fiction stories that imagine a world where New Orleans no longer exists as a result of an environmental catastrophe — all of this is in support of the 9th grade enduring question: what are the implications of restoration and preservation in New Orleans? The completed project will result in a chapbook published by 826 New Orleans, and a wonderful book release party event at Longvue Gardens at the end of January for students, families, and staff.

Operation Spark Spring Courses
Operation Spark will soon begin registering for their spring 2019 after-school courses. If you, your child, or anyone you know is interested in taking their courses in January, please fill out the interest form by following the link below. Their introductory course has no prerequisites and is open to students in grades 10-12.
The application for Summer 2020 is now open! These programs allow rising 6th-12th grade students to explore new subjects and tackle real-world issues while in a safe, supportive college environment.
What is something you have learned in the past week?
I have learned more about my career interests. I want to be a neo-nato nurse. I learned more in-depth about what you have to do to achieve that and what degrees you need to have. I also learned that people can be fake.
What is a misconception people have about you?
Some people think I’m mean and kinda stuck up, but I’m not, I just keep to myself because I see how some of my peers act all crazy, but I think it’s better to be calm and quiet sometimes.
What is the biggest dream you have for yourself that you do not often say aloud?
To be something other people aren’t and actually achieve my dreams long term. I don’t just want to say something in the moment or to get the question out of the way with.
Who has had a positive influence on your life so far and why?
My mother, sometimes no one else is there but she always is.
What would you do differently if you knew nobody would judge you?
I’d speak my mind a little bit more. Some things you just can’t say out loud. I’d be freer, I’m already myself but I would just be freer.
What do you like about New Harmony?
Everything! It’s different and I actually like coming to school. I hated last year. I like New Harmony, no, I love it.
